Steel
West Virginia has three excellent steel companies in the Weirton area and our only mini-mill in Huntington. Weirton Steel is one of the largest industrial employers in the state. The steel industry is a huge energy user. The IOF-WV steel industry group is working closely with the West Virginia Steel Advisory Commission on joint programs and meetings. A WVU-Oak Ridge National Laboratory team is working with Weirton Steel and Wheeling Nisshin on a project to reduce corrosion of roller bearings in continuous galvanizing lines.
IOF-WV Steel Issues in Brief
- Reduce casting costs.
- Develop new materials for increased life of pot hardware in continuous hot dip processes.
- Improve process control sensor technologies.
- Reduce transportation costs.
- Develop cost-effective alternative chemical treatments to prevent white rust of galvanized products.
